Post subject: Just a note about me absence....
I try to get here as often as possible, everyday if I can. The last two weeks have been heck with my system. I had put XP Pro on and it was a clean install. I re-partitioned, re-formatted, and installed XP. Then did the updates to drivers and all. I have never seen my system so ill responding! I went to a guru freind of mine and they directed me to a place that deals with nothing but XP related problems. I need power because of the graphic software I am using. Not some freindly OS that can try and think what my next click is going to be. I paid this place $20 to have them give me a step by step instruction sheet on the changes I needed to make to have the system respond the way I needed, and it should of. Well didn't work, although their instructions where to a T and the system did prove to be better, it still was a far cry from Win2K Pro! So what does one do when it's broke? Fix it! So I did, another two days of re-partitioning, re-formatting, and installing a clean OS. This time back to what I know works. Win2K Pro. Then there's the few days needed to re-install all the software that was/is needed to continue onward. I am pretty close to a full recovery from XP Down Sindrome and should be back on track to my daily visits.....And to think they are talking about a new OS from Microsoft and getting rid of all previous versions! Longhorn OS........

I've heard about Longhorn and it sounds like a pretty scary and nasty OS. It runs your life

more than you would want them to know. Does Big Brother in the 21 Century ring a bell to you? I remember it in the 60s and it has come to this as an up to date Devils Curse.

Good luck with it all Hawktoey. At the moment I know the feeling

Yeah, the OS's are getting a little too smart and a little too intrusive. I hate a computer second guessing my favourites, or my next move... or anything much for that matter. But then, I like to drive a manual transmission car too

Can anyone spell 'luddite'

Well...I upgraded my comp over the weekend from 98se to XP Home and it's running better than ever. I was surprised how well it identified all my hardware and Uru: Beyond Myst runs much better as do Poser and my other programs. I have heard of problems with the SP2 upgrade but I have no personal experience of this. It is a right royal pain to go through all the reformatting and installing all the programs though
Did you have FAT32 or NTFS?

Just make sure when you run Service Pack 2, to close all other programs, turn off any screen savers, hybernation and stand by, anything that may interupt the install because on a fast machine the innitial install takes approx. 45 minutes. it could be longer on a slower machine. also as a side note, SP2 enables the windows firewall by default, so if you have problems with any virus software updating or any network utility not working correctly, that would be a good place to start trouble shooting. secondly, the NTFS file system is the better and faster one. I don't recommend compression as i have had problems with hard drive crashes when I enabled it. just remember that any FAT or FAT32 file allocation table dependant operating system will not be able to see the NTFS partition without XP running to share it.

NTFS is always choosen method for me. I have a notebook and it's running WinXP Pro SP2. The first time SP2 installed it crashed my hard drive after it re-booted the system and I had to start over again with it. But that wasn't so bad as I do all updates before installing any other software. So it was only a matter of re-installing XP. The second time I did not allow it to re-boot my machine when it was finished. I let the computer sit for about five minutes after that then re-booted and it took fine. Notebook is running like a champ but I cannot use a couple of programs on it that I do my desktop. This is alright also as those programs require a higher screen resolution than the 1024 x 768 that the notebook offers.
