Post subject: Fonts
Here is my proposesd topic post below for my intended font collection (okay they're 3rd party). I guess it's more a niche subject, but one that is lacking in general.

I'm after opinions, on how is best to present them I don't expect much response at all, but at least there will be a collection on tap here at PF, for anyone that may find a need for them.

I'd like to put them in the section for Props without a parent (sigh). A little section of their own within it would be grand though.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm planning to convert fonts from True type to OBJ.

But first I need to explain a little about fonts before I can start.

I have amassed many hundreds of fonts over the years, many have been installed yet to my dismay I found many were un-useable, not because of their appearance but by limitations imposed by copyright.

For example on a newly installed Windows based PC, you will find a few nice fonts that serve your purpose immediately, you begin your enterprise commercial or non-commercial, you could make a flyer advertising a yard sale, or you could make a simple text document, a script for a play, a poem, a song, a story, or anything else textual. This you may share without any thought. It matters not until you find to your dismay, as I did that in many cases the fonts we get, have restrictions on use typically for personal use only (well I did by a PC = personal computer).

This also applies to the fonts downloaded for free. Yes they were free to download, but their uses often have crippling restrictions to personal use only (PC again).

What to do...

How would you know which fonts are safe to use, for any purpose you desire. Well for a Windows PC, you can follow the link below, and on download and install the properties tab for your installed fonts will have a licence tab if applicable (not all fonts have the licence information in the tab).

LINK;
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/TrueTypeProperty21.mspx

How to go on...

In order to aquire reliable free fonts, for freedom in use we must study the various licences that are available. We are fortunate that there are folks who make and share great fonts without restrictions on use.

(There are many commercial fonts also, but even they can have crippling limitations due to being proprietary).

The kinds of font licences to look for are:

SIL OFL (Open Font Licence)
Link;
http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=OFL

Apache Licence version 2.0 (Also used by Android open source)
Link;
http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html

GNU GPL (General Public Licence) (Also used by Redhat Liberation Licence)
Link;
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html

Ubuntu Font Licence Version 1.0
Link;
http://font.ubuntu.com/licence/

Public Domain Licence / Freeware Licence (CC Attribution Sharealike Licence with derivatives)
Link;
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/publicdomain/

Un licenced (i.e. no licence, nor ownership)
Link;
(No link, you just found some un-claimed treasure)

As an example reliable places to search for free to download, and commercial useage approved, with modifications allowed, and distribution rights.

Link (FontSquirrel);
http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/list/mostdownloaded

Link (SimplyTheBest);
http://fonts.simplythebest.net/

From the above covered information, my intention then, in accordance with the font licence types above, is to convert applicable fonts into OBJ format for use in Poser, and also distribute the original un-altered font with it (in accordance with the licence). I'm not modifying the font, but converting it for import to Poser. I need the modify clause however to cover for what happens to the font in Poser (it becomes 3D if Z axis is scaled), beyond scalinq the Z axis, we can scale along another one of the axis', which could be seen as modifying, as the aspect ratio would be modified from the original too.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
