Post subject: [Tutorial] How to use my Toon Shading System
01 - Because some people asked for it here is how to use the toon shading
<br />
<br />
system I use, at first I started making a lot of different colors materials
<br />
<br />
collection to post but I thought that making a customizable system would
<br />
<br />
save space and make it easier to use so go to the Free Stuff and download
<br />
<br />
the shading System. For those interested in the technical part of the node
<br />
<br />
system, the true is it's very simple, is just a toon node, but as the
<br />
<br />
outline of the node don't look good IMHO then I added a technique learned at
<br />
<br />
castleposer, that use a rounded edge blend node for this, it's really very
<br />
<br />
simple and in the process of making it easy to use and customize it became a
<br />
<br />
little confusing.
<br />
<br />
OK, now let's see how to use it, just open poser, it works in poser 5 and
<br />
<br />
up, this tutorial is done in Poser 5; set your scene.
<br />
<br />
Download the Shading System <a class="post-url" href="http://www.posetteforever.com/dload.php?action=file&file_id=458">HERE</a>

02 - Go to the Material Room select a material you want to set into Toon,
<br />
<br />
and go to the library where you installed the Toon Shading System

03 - Apply the Shading, the closed nodes are the shading itself, and you
<br />
<br />
don't need to touch them, unless you want to modify something, the lower
<br />
<br />
nodes are the controls parameters and I changed the name of the nodes so
<br />
<br />
you can easily identify its functions.

04 - Let's see it closely:
<br />
<br />
Main Color: is the main color of the Shading you can attach a texture here
<br />
<br />
if you like, but in most cases a simple color make the toon affect
<br />
<br />
Shadow tone: if you want a shadow color set it to any color different than
<br />
<br />
white, it mean white Shadow Tone is NO SHADOW, a shade of gray works but
<br />
<br />
no need to be so, you can get interesting effects using different colors,
<br />
<br />
for instance in the skin color use the same color as the Main color to get
<br />
<br />
a warmer shadow tone; here you can use a texture too.
<br />
<br />
Outline color: this is the color of the outline, in most cases black but
<br />
<br />
again it's out to your imagination to use different colors, again texture
<br />
<br />
can be used but in this case in must be set to white or other color.
<br />
<br />
Outline width: (CHANGE ONLY the Value_1 of This node) This parameter
<br />
<br />
control the with of the outline, try small amount up or down if necessary.
<br />
<br />
Glossy: This is a Glossy node and it's set to off by default,
<br />
<br />
Specular_Color controls the color of the highlight, KS controls the strength
<br />
<br />
0 is off, for a good effect use 2 or 3 for this parameter, roughness control the size
<br />
<br />
of the highlight and sharpness are already set for a good toon specular.
<br />
<br />
Apply the shading to all materials you want to Toon, and don't forget you
<br />
<br />
can do right click select all, copy, select other material right click
<br />
<br />
select all, delete, then paste.

05 - In most cases only just one infinite white light is needed, this are
<br />
<br />
the parameters for a good toon render, most important are to set Pixels
<br />
<br />
Sample to 4 Post filter size to 2 and Post filter type to gaussian this
<br />
<br />
setting will give you very smooth edges.

06 - The toon shadow will be present even if your light is not casting
<br />
<br />
shadow, but if you want shadow from your characters and objects then set
<br />
<br />
your light to Ray Trace shadows, (can you see the nice shadow from the hand
<br />
<br />
of the character?) don't forget to activate shadows and ray tracing in the
<br />
<br />
render settings.

07 - Now this is an small example of what can be done using different
<br />
<br />
colors, for a creepy dark effect here I used blue for main skin color a very
<br />
<br />
dark blue for shadow, and white for the outline, moved the light down so
<br />
<br />
it illuminate from the floor and the effect is good for dark places.

Post subject: Re: [Tutorial] How to use my Toon Shading System
08 - The BG Monocolor Full Amb and No ambient tourn the image to a
<br />
<br />
monocolor map use it on any background prop lie cyclorama to get this
<br />
<br />
drawing effect, just apply set your texture select a base color and increase
<br />
<br />
or decrease the Value_1 from the math_Functions node to get the right
<br />
<br />
picture, the full amb material set the shading to use full ambient for dark
<br />
<br />
scene so you can see your background even with almost no light, but it
<br />
<br />
wont receive shadow, the No Amb material don't use ambient and is perfect
<br />
<br />
for receiving shadows.
<br />
<br />
The BG Posterized Full Amb and No Amb works almost in the same way as the
<br />
<br />
Monocolor but aply a posterize efect (reduction of colors) to the
<br />
<br />
background.

09 - Hope you like this system, enjoy it and find it as fun and easy as I
<br />
<br />
found to do toon renders, now I want to see your works and remember there
<br />
<br />
are no color rules at all in toon world just use your imagination.

Thank you.
<br />
<br />
Although not directly related to my quest for a utility / IrfanView plug-in for contouring / posterising a gray-scale terrain map, is nice to see such good work.
