DEATHMATCH ARENA - Are Fractal People Cliquish?

Post subject: Are Fractal People Cliquish?
Hi! I was following a thread awhile ago at another site and someone was writing that "Fractal People" are cliquish. Someone else said that folks who use Terragen are cliquish, and then someone else said that Poser users are cliquish - well, you get the point. So, what do you think . . . ?

I agree that theres a there are cliques in art and other fields. There is nothing wrong with them, since in this case clique is another name for community. As Butch says, they will develop based on the the friends and aquaintances we make in the various galleries and forums. And of course which sites make us feel comfortable.

The problems are when the cliques/communities become closed and not welcoming of new members or exclusive in that members are not made to feel comfortable in being a member of multiple communities.

Among artist who use Poser and Studio, there are additional sub-cliques too. There are some based on the use of Maya Doll, others for Sara only, etc. Some are based on artwork of faries, and others are based on artforms that would exclude some of our younger members from joining. There is even one based on the use of the Poser 3 and Poser 4 Nude Woman model, who we call Posette.

As for me, I am active at different levels in serveral websites and the communities that they support. The two communites where I am most active are those of Posetteforever and Tapestry of Dreams. When you go to a new forum/gallery it may be a little while before you start fitting in. When you go to one, in the beginning you will often see that someone you already know is a part of that community too. That is always nice.

As for the use of software, I don't care which software/tools I use. I use whatever tools that I have available and that will permit me to create the artworks born from my artistic vision. At the same time, I like artworks created by artists using any tools that choose, as long as I like the appearance of their art.

None of us are fractal artists, Terragen artist, Poser, Bryce, TrueSpace, etc people. We are all just artist and those are the tools we choose to work with.

Pangor

I found out first hand how cliquish people can be at various art communities. I posted a few Terragen pictures at an unnamed "other" site, and was abused for it, along with the others who commented favorably upon my pictures. You see, they were my friends whom I met in the fractal galleries, and, naturally, they supported me when I posted under other genres, as I did them when they similarly posted. My Terragen pictures were deleted as having "caused too much controversy." I was quite fortunate that you told me of this site, Gojira. Thank you, and cheers

Christopher, I think I may know the site that you speak of (but still will not be named); I have seen the empty ruins of those personal galleries. It is ironic though that the site does have a catagory for Terragen images. I have posted my landscapes there and my landscape background packages are listed in their free stuff listing. It sounds like too many of the wrong people kinds of people (trolls) found you at that site. But in the long run that brought you here .

Pangor

Yeah. I remember that, Chris. Those yo-yos at that Terragen gallery really peeved me. I'll tell you, if my grandmother - God rest her soul - had been around there, she would have smacked them good a few times just to teach them some manners. They used to do that in the Old Country back then - just ask Tormentor. They used to smack you if you didn't show some respect

Well I'll have to be honest about it there are some out there in the 3D world who are very snobbish. I myself have seen it. Some are good with the software while others instead of trying to be diffirent tend to buy something and put it on the mat render it and think they done it all by themselves which tends to give a false sence that they are artists. I guess that is ok but when you see it at a store on line for $12.99, well I think that is giving a person way to much credit. As far as being here as a place to show your work. It is why it's here. A sort of I'm tired of the seen and need to get away thinggy. It started with an idea that a a Posette could still be loved and admired. She was always pretty. Not like a certain Judy but I won't go there. Anyone that I can remember that has been threw this site has always been kind and knows from their lives why they came here. Once they where here they begin to realise that they were not alone. As far as the word cliquish. It simply doesn't pertain to this site. As a matter of fact the word is not in my vocabulary at all for it is not who we are. Friends? Yes. Anybody can be a friend. So why not fall in love with someones art today. Meanwhile I'll just take the word cliquish out with the trash.

Did you know that our dear sweet Posy has a gallery over there?

If you have any doubts about who amoung our friends here are overthere too, take a look at my homepage on that site, they are listed on it with others artists that I like the works of who I found are overthere. Young Butch is correct in his retelling. Some of my friends posted comments on my Terragen pictures, along with others, and somehow one post ended up in the "Top Twenty," or whatever they call it. This drew howls of protest, and nasty comments, many of which were aimed at those who posted reviews. This made me understandably upset, that others should be abused in this fashion, particularly because they had had the courtesy of returning comments after I had visited their pages.

As noted by others, this site is refreshingly devoid of such terrible behaviour and manners. Perhaps the spirit of Robert's grandmother should visit the "other site" for a few days. Cheers

It would be wonderful if she would visit them with her rolling pin. I reciently learned how the top twenty at that site works. The top twenty list for each catagory Poser, Bryce, Terragen etc is the twenty most voted for pictures in that catagory for the previous voting period. (I am not certain of how long the voting period is). Votes are cast by viewers clicking on the "Vote" button on the display page of the pictures.

Several well established and respected artists at that site have been driven away by the same sort of attacks resulting from the voting process. A few have returned but others have not, this has upset many of the regulars of that site. There is a call over there by a number of the members to either do away with the vote and top twenty system, or permitting an artist to disable it for his pictures.

I am lucky, none of my works have been in the top twenty in that gallery (unless I didn't notice it).

Pangor

Thank you for your appreciation on Posetteforever friends . I wrote about the topic a lot of times. The "politic" here, in the album, in the forum or elsewhere is to reply and stop immediately the non constructive criticism warning the user or worse. The purpose of the album is to show your works and the comments are made for congratulations and suggestions to improve the user's skill trying to avoid that an user finding a bad comment think that his/her work is not good and stops with 3d art . My fault that I'm not so present in the album but I would love to watch and comment all the pictures in the album because is sad for the author a picture without a comment under it

At the "big one" you can even choose not to receive a comment or a vote, but it's important to share your work. I don't know what they were called in Japan, but I do have fond memories of some Anime that was imported to America. Starblazers (Spaceship Yamato?) and Robotech, Captain Harlock and two others that I don't remember the names of.

I agree with Tormentor about sharing you artworks in many places. I have everything posted here at Posetteforever, and most of it in other galleries too, nine galleries at last count.

I have not shown any of my works in public for many years. I have also been away from the art field for almost as long. When my first new artwork was ready to be posted at the very end of last year, I hesitated for a few day. In the meantime I searched the sites that I knew about to determine where to post.

I rejected out of hand the sites like DAZ and Curious Labs, since by posting there they become de facto coowners and you have given them the right to use you pictures as they please to promote their products.

Then I found other things that I did not like about other sites. In the end I selected two places, Posetteforever and PoserPros. Even after making the selection, I found it difficult to actually do it. In the past, most of what I offered for viewing by the public have been poorly received. But the computer art culture was much different in those day. I have this year posted two of my olders works, that caused me a lot of trouble back then; there were well received in some galleries this time. One of those two is a moderized recreation from memory of one of my older works. The other is one that I discovered enough fragments of the old scene file that I was able to reassemble the original and rerender it.

As a result of how the first few were accepted here I started uploading them at Renderosity too. Perhaps I was lucky, but most of reactions were positive and the and most of the people I encountered were nice. Oh, I did encounter some bad reactions at Renderosity and at PoserPros, I will soon address that in a new topic, some of them have left me shaking my head, but in each case I am still posting in those places and the not so nice people have either left the site or have chosen to leave me alone.

Now for those of you yet familiar with Poser characters, Posette and the rest of the stock Poser people, animals, and robots are not very popular with the 3D Poser/Studio Communities. Most see them as being the model you play with until you can get a real model. Frankly I like the Posettes, how they look and how the behave with the software. Many remember their early poorly done work, and blame it on the models instead of the fact that they were beginners. The same is true for Don and Judy of Poser 5; I suspect it will be true for Jessie and James of Poser 6. I have used various models, some stock, some free addons, and some commercial addons. They each have their own benefits and disadvantages, I see them all as part of a talent pool to be used when they are the best choice for the picture at hand.

Most of my works include at least one Posette based character. When I returned to art the Poser 4 people were the most advanced and yet best to learn with. My skill having become rusty and my need to learn new techinques with the new set of tools, lead me do doing most of my experiments of late last year with Posette and Dork. Of the two, I found Posette more fun to experiment with than Dork; because, I was trying to learn how to create textures for them and with Posette I didn't have to worry about so much body hair as would be required with Dork. (Hair is my real weakness).

I have posted my works galleries of some sites where everyone there seemed to have considered Posette as nothing more than a joke. My works with her have been welcomed there. The problem is that many have not taken the time to really work with her and see what she can do. At a couple of those sites, I have started to see othe Posette caracters being used. While at one of them, my work in their gallery has lead to an unofficial "Posette Portrait" contest.

In each gallery where I have uploaded my works, I have met more nice people. That is how I first encountered Gojira, from his comments on my works over at Rendervisions.

As I have mentioned before, I first found Posetteforever because of one of Tormentor's works that he posted to the newsgroups.

P.S. Friday, September 30[sup:95b5396077]th[/sup:95b5396077] is the one year anniversary of my regaining inspiration and my ability to work with art.

Pangor

I know quite a bit of what you say, Butch. My brother's children enjoy the football matches here in Wales. They sing Welsh songs and generally carry on so. In a way, it's quite amusing. What many do not know, is that theatrical performances in the time of Shakespeare had the air of a modern football match, as well - at least in terms of the hoots of derision from the audience for bad performances, muffed lines, terrible dialogue and similar things.
