Having (FINALLY!!!) got back into a creative mood that looks to stick around more than a week or so, I've just realized exactly how much I've forgotten when it comes to Poser. So I've decided to start off with the older Poser figures (Sorry, Posy) and work my way up...

Which brings me to the question at hand. Exactly how similar are the P3 Female and Posette when it comes to transferring morphs?

I ask, because buried way, way, WAAAYYY back in the download archives I've accumulated is Hellborn's Bettie Page for P3F, and I like the character's head morph, basic as it may be. Can it be transferred to a Posette head?  Or do I have to suffer the P3F texture mapping?

Good to hear you're back in playing mode.
In my early Poser years I've been using P3 for a long time, even as P5 was out already. Almost no stuff was around anymore for P3, so I had to stick to P4 freebies, that were quite common still. I came to experiment a lot on compatibility issues. So here's my list.

Headmorph         yes
Neck                   yes (?)
Chest and collars no
Abdomen            ?, but I think yes
Hip and Thighs     no
Shins and lower parts of the arms, as well as hands, feet, fingers, toes should work too.

Mr X's Morphmanager is a great tool for this still. If you don't have it or lost it, should be for download at RR's , and Englishbob provides a mirror, too at Morphography, or simply contact me

PS: Here's my version of Betty. I used her wig and mixed the original face morph with one of my own creations. It's a P4 Posette (that I stumbled over by accident) in P3 !

That's good news - I've got the Morph Manager software in my archives, so there should be no issues.

My goal is to study some of the iconic Bettie Page photo-shoots and see if I can replicate a couple of the sets, and then get as close to the correct camera angles and lighting as can be reasonably expected.

Once that is accomplished, I'll try and duplicate some of the costumes that Bettie made for her shoots.

Once *that* is done I want to build a Bettie Page character - emphasis on skin textures and body shape.

I know I have the V3 morphs & hair from Morpheus, but my goal is to use Posette for most of the experiment.

I figure that will give me much needed experience in designing a scene and a character from scratch....

You'll find a joint parameter adjustment for both P3 & P4 Nude Woman, in .cr2 form.

They both bend better than normal, and are stock morph compatible (use you Morph Manager 4, to transfer), so there is no hybrid incompatibility nonsense to worry about. You just treat them as a regular stock Posette, figure.

Also thanks to Posette's separate shoulder, and collar bone layout, there is nothing like the horrid look you get with an unmodified V4, around the armpits. On a regular Posette, it looks bad, but fixed, it works like a dream.

I've started working on a basic shooting set - using footage from some of the Irving Klaw reels Bettie Page did as reference.

(Watching an hour's worth of Bettie on DVD it becomes clear that her appeal comes from her enthusiasm for posing... Difficult to replicate in animation, but possible in still images. I hope.)

Judging from the shadows, illumination consisted of a couple of main lights in front of her at 45 degrees each side.  No key lights, no fill lights, no back lights, no nothing. Maybe augmented by normal room lights.

The set - and the term 'set' is being charitable in the extreme - is a wall with two windows either side of a fifties-style two-sweater plush couch, some curtains to cover the windows, a table lamp on a small side table... And that's it. Same set was in all the Klaw footage I watched - though at some point they did bother to re-surface the wall at one stage.

So for this first experiment I think I'll stay with Poser through to the final render, instead of working in Max as I normally would.  (3D Studio Max is so much easier to work with when setting up complex lighting...)

Well color me embarrassed ("That'll be #54, 'Burnt Crimson', Bob...") as I didn't need to spend all that time on the DVD after all. Turns out that when I went on my pinup art reference buying spree a couple of years back, I bought a couple of book on Bettie Page... Then promptly forgot about them.

Found them while digging up some of the Poser reference books I also forgot about until this morning.

And then to compound things even further, I found some old runtime archives of an earlier Bettie Page character I was attempting to dial in using P7s stock bimbo.

If I find Amelia Airheart, I'll alert the media.....

Anyhoo... Using Morpheus's Bettie Page Set props (very handy all things considered) I whipped up a quick render to check out my lighting theory - using blue & red lights all the better to track where each shadow was coming from...

 

Shadows do indeed match up with the videos I watched.  However...

Since I want to render stills, I'm going to have to rethink a little.  Shadows that you ignore while watching movement become glaringly obvious in a still picture.

Time to ponder...

Well, if history is anything to go by here at PF, it may take a while...

Anyway... Been perusing my Bettie picture collection and am about ready to start putting together my own version of the set...

Walls, flooring and curtains are the first order of the day.
